Tracking Unresolved Choices in a Landscape Plan: Questions to Settle First

By @rgalmanzalandscapenotes

Open questions are part of a landscape plan. Keep them visible so that a preference, an assumption and an agreed selection do landscape design planning not appear to have the same status.

Name the question

Write the particular choice that remains unresolved. Identify whether it concerns the layout, a material, planting or the sequence of work. Avoid broad notes that make it difficult to tell what decision is still required.

Identify what is needed

Ask what information or assessment would help resolve the question and who is expected to provide it. Note whether other selections depend on that decision. Do not turn an incomplete example or preliminary sketch into an instruction before the missing details are discussed.

Close the record

When a choice is agreed, record it in the current proposal or plan. Keep the earlier question for context while making the accepted selection easy to identify. Review remaining open items before scheduling so that nobody has to infer which decisions were settled.

Keep the next decision clear

Keep a short record of the decision, the area it affects and any information still needed. That record should stay with the current proposal so that a later conversation does not begin from an older understanding.
